Castiadas ex penal colony

Castiadas is the oldest penal colony of Sardinia, and the largest in Italy. The complex dates back to the second half of 1800’s, when the Ministry of the Interior decided to establish an agricultural penal colony where prisoners would follow the daily agro-pastoral life style, while contributing to the remediation of a marshy area that previously was uninhabited for centuries.

Originally the prisoners were just a few dozen, but in less than a year the colony was populated by 500 inmates. Their time was dedicated to cattle breeding and the cultivation of wheat and cereals and vines.

The Castiadas Prison was discontinued in 1952 and the area divided into seven farms. However, today the  remains of the past are still evident: you can still visit the Directors villa, the cells, the guards' barracks, offices, pharmacy and a few other buildings in the complex.
